Our Story

More than a Repellent. A Hydrating Protectant.

Notch (a play on no-itch) was born in the summer of 2024 in Austin, Texas, a place known for its brutal heat and swarming mosquitoes. In our endless search for relief, we couldn’t help but question why repellents, designed to protect our skin, were often shelved next to harsh household chemicals and insecticides. Why aren’t we treating repellents like skincare?

We set out to change that. Over the next year, we developed a formula that meets strict EPA guidelines for efficacy while looking, feeling, and applying like a premium skincare product.

Our debut launch, Notch Nourish + Defend Insect Repellent, pairs proven plant-based protection with skin-loving ingredients because we believe you shouldn’t have to choose between comfort and performance.

This is just the beginning. Our mission is to create clean, elevated products that protect and nourish your skin while fitting seamlessly into your everyday routine.

Our Active Ingredient

Geraniol

At the heart of Notch is geraniol, a naturally occurring compound found in essential oils like rose, citronella, lemongrass and geranium. Geraniol is a monoterpenoid alcohol with a light floral scent. Chosen for its powerful yet gentle qualities, geraniol allows us to offer protection without compromise.

Our Founder

Shannon Kolarik

Shannon has dedicated much of her career to the natural food and beauty industries, where she has brought innovative products to market. A proud Whole Foods Market alum, Shannon spent several years collaborating with emerging brand founders to help tell their stories. Now, as a founder herself, she’s excited to bring all her passion and learnings to the Notch brand. Shannon lives in Austin, Texas with her husband Michael.
